Chapter 2 - Extraction in the Dark

Marcus moved with the silent, practiced efficiency of a former special operations combat veteran. Supported by David Ross, my long-time Director of Corporate Security, Marcus secured a heavy padded climbing harness around my shoulders and waist, ensuring the straps bypassed my pregnant belly entirely. Together, the two men hoisted me out of the suspended safety netting and onto a secure, concealed scaffolding catwalk that had been bolted into the granite cliff face two days earlier.

“Are you hurt, Ms. Sterling? How is the baby?” David asked in a low, urgent whisper, wrapping a heavy thermal tactical coat around my shivering shoulders as the freezing ocean wind whipped across the rocks.

“I’m intact, David. The net absorbed the entire impact,” I breathed, pressing my palm against my abdomen. A sudden, sharp tightening sensation radiated across my lower back—a Braxton Hicks contraction triggered by the adrenaline surge, or perhaps something more serious. I forced my breathing to slow, refusing to let panic override my intellect. “She’s moving. My daughter is a fighter.”

“We need to get you to the safehouse immediately,” Marcus said, guiding me along the narrow metal catwalk toward a hidden maintenance tunnel that bored directly through the limestone bluff into the estate’s underground boathouse. “Julian’s phone just pinged our internal cell tower. He’s dialing the local emergency dispatch right now. The police and search-and-rescue marine units will be swarming the bay within twenty minutes.”

We moved rapidly through the damp, dimly lit tunnel. As we reached the boathouse, a sleek, blacked-out executive armored transport van was waiting with its engine running softly. Sitting inside the climate-controlled cabin was Elena Rostova, my primary corporate and family litigation counsel. Her laptop was open, illuminating her sharp, focused features as she monitored real-time financial data streams from my corporate servers.

“You’re safe,” Elena said, letting out a long sigh of relief as Marcus helped me climb into the plush leather seating of the van. She immediately handed me a bottle of electrolyte water and a warm blanket. “I watched the terrace thermal feed from here. It was flawless, Victoria. We have high-definition 4K infrared video of Julian manually shoving you over the balustrade, alongside clear audio of Chloe Mercer stating her intent to claim your estate.”

“Did he try to access the primary operational accounts yet?” I asked, leaning back against the leather headrest as Marcus pulled the van out of the boathouse through a secondary private access road that bypassed the main estate gates entirely.

“He didn't even wait for the police to arrive,” Elena said, her eyes flashing with professional disgust. “Two minutes after he pushed you over the ledge, he logged into his laptop using the administrative passcodes he stole from your home office. He attempted to initiate a five-million-dollar wire transfer from your personal treasury account to an offshore holding company in the Caymans.”

“Let me guess,” I murmured, a cold, predatory smile touching my lips. “The transfer didn't go through.”

“It hit our administrative sandbox and froze instantly,” Elena confirmed. “He thinks it’s just a weekend processing delay. He has no idea that the moment you fell, I executed an emergency corporate lockdown. He is currently standing on a mountain of digital ice, and tomorrow morning, we begin shattering it beneath his feet.”
