Chapter 8 - The Financial Glitch

At 9:45 AM, the atmosphere inside the formal boardroom of the Sterling Estate was thick with tension and the smell of expensive coffee. The room, situated on the main floor of the mansion with expansive glass windows looking out over the front courtyard, was designed for high-level corporate governance. Sitting around the long, twenty-foot mahogany conference table were four senior executive vice presidents of Sterling Global and three managing directors from Continental Trust Bank—the institutional guardians of my corporate empire.
Julian Vance sat at the head of the table, occupying my traditional executive chair. He had discarded his somber widower sweater for a sharp, tailored charcoal suit, projecting an aura of authoritative control. Chloe Mercer sat quietly in a corner chair near the bookshelves, wearing a conservative black dress, posing as Julian’s "personal administrative assistant" to justify her presence in the room.
“Gentlemen, I appreciate you assembling on such short notice during this tragic time for my family,” Julian began, leaning forward with his hands clasped on the mahogany wood. “While my heart is broken by the loss of my beloved wife and our unborn child, the operational continuity of Sterling Global cannot be permitted to falter. As Victoria’s legal husband and statutory next of kin, it is my fiduciary responsibility to assume immediate interim control over the executive treasury accounts to ensure our pending commercial acquisitions close without delay.”
Mr. Henderson, the elderly Chairman of Continental Trust, adjusted his reading glasses and looked across the table at Julian with a cautious, skeptical expression. “Mr. Vance, while we extend our deepest condolences for your personal loss, corporate governance laws regarding an estate of this magnitude are extremely precise. We cannot authorize the release of treasury liquidity or transfer executive signatory authority without the formal presentation of a certified death certificate and the explicit authorization of Ms. Sterling’s primary legal counsel, Elena Rostova.”
“Ms. Rostova is running late, but she has already been instructed to bring the administrative override protocols,” Julian replied smoothly, attempting to mask the rising irritation in his tone. He opened his laptop and turned the screen toward the bankers. “However, to demonstrate that the primary operating accounts are fully secure, I initiated a standard liquidity verification transfer of five million dollars an hour ago. As you can see, the transaction is currently...”
Julian’s voice trailed off. He blinked, squinting at his screen. The status bar of the five-million-dollar wire transfer, which had previously displayed “Pending Processing,” had suddenly changed to a glaring, bright red box containing a single word: REJECTED - ACCOUNT FROZEN.
“What is this?” Julian muttered, tapping his keyboard frantically. He attempted to refresh the banking portal, only to be met by a secondary pop-up notification: ERROR 404: ACCESS DENIED. USER CREDENTIALS REVOKED BY SYSTEM ADMINISTRATOR.
“Is there a problem with the liquidity verification, Mr. Vance?” Mr. Henderson asked, leaning forward with a sharp, interrogative look.

Before Julian could manufacture an excuse, the heavy double oak doors of the boardroom swung wide open. Elena Rostova walked into the room, dressed in a formidable black power suit, carrying a thick leather briefcase. Behind her walked two uniformed corporate security officers from Sterling Global, who immediately positioned themselves on either side of the exit doors, crossing their arms with rigid, tactical precision.
“There is no problem with the banking system, Mr. Henderson,” Elena said clearly, her voice cutting through the room like an icicle as she walked toward the head of the table. “The user credentials were revoked because Mr. Vance has no legal, fiduciary, or statutory authority to access a single dollar of the Sterling Global treasury.”
