Chapter 13 - The Arrest

Before Julian could even attempt to process the absolute totality of his financial ruin, the heavy double oak doors of the boardroom opened for the third time that morning.

Marching into the room in a sharp, tactical formation were four armed special agents from the FBI Financial Crimes and Major Case Division, accompanied by two uniformed detectives from the State Police Homicide Bureau. Their badges gleamed under the recessed lighting, their hands resting firmly near their utility belts as they quickly surrounded the conference table.

“Julian Vance and Chloe Mercer,” the lead FBI agent announced, his deep voice cutting through the silence of the boardroom as he pulled a pair of heavy steel handcuffs from his belt. “You are both placed under federal and state arrest.”

Chloe screamed—a high-pitched, hysterical wail of absolute terror—as two federal agents grabbed her by her elbows, hauling her up from the carpet and forcing her arms behind her back. “No! Please! I didn't push her! It was all Julian’s idea! He forced me to do it! I’m just an assistant! Don't put me in handcuffs!”

“Save it for the federal magistrate, ma'am,” the agent barked, snapping the steel cuffs securely around her wrists and reading her Miranda rights as she wept uncontrollably, her emerald silk dress looking pathetic and rumpled against the tactical vests of the law enforcement officers.

At the head of the table, Julian didn't fight. He didn't scream or curse like Chloe. The sheer, overwhelming magnitude of his defeat had completely paralyzed his nervous system. He sat frozen in his leather chair like a wax statue, staring blankly at the polished mahogany wood as the lead state detective stepped up behind him and grabbed his wrists, pulling his arms behind his back with a sharp, metallic clink of steel restraints.

“Julian Vance,” the detective read clearly from his warrant, ensuring every corporate board member and banker in the room heard the charges. “You are under arrest for Attempted First-Degree Capital Murder, Conspiracy to Commit Murder, Aggravated Assault on a Pregnant Person, Federal Wire Fraud, Bank Fraud, and Money Laundering. You have the right to remain silent. Anything you say can and will be used against you in a court of law.”

As the detectives hauled Julian roughly to his feet, pulling him away from the table, he stopped for a split second, turning his head to look back at me. His eyes were wide, bloodshot, and filled with a haunted, hollow realization.

“You knew,” Julian whispered, his voice shaking with a tremor that rattled his cuffed wrists. “You knew the entire time... every time I kissed you last week... every time we talked about the baby’s nursery... you were just waiting to destroy me.”

I stood up slowly from my chair, adjusting the cuffs of my cream wool suit. I walked around the table until I stood barely two feet from him, looking down into his shattered eyes with absolute, unshakeable dignity.

“I told you once, Julian, that in the Sterling family, we protect what is ours,” I said softly, my voice carrying no anger—only the cold, indifferent authority of a queen dismissing a traitor. “You thought my kindness was weakness. You thought my pregnancy made me vulnerable. You forgot that a mother protecting her child is the most dangerous force on this earth.”

I gestured to the detectives. “Get them out of my boardroom. And get them off my estate.”

The police officers hauled Julian and Chloe toward the double doors, their handcuffed wrists clinking noisily against their belt chains as they were paraded out of the mansion in front of the gathered news cameras waiting in the front courtyard. I stood by the glass windows watching as they were shoved into the back of separate blacked-out federal transport vehicles, watching the flashing blue lights disappear down the cliffside driveway forever.
