Chapter 9 - The Final Ultimatum

The walls were closing in on Julian. His criminal trial was approaching, and his public defender told him he was looking at a minimum of eight years.

He begged for a meeting. I agreed to meet him at Evelyn’s office, bringing Leo with me. I wanted Julian to see exactly what he had thrown away.

Julian sat across the conference table, his eyes darting frantically to the baby carrier, though he didn't dare reach for it. He looked hollowed out.

"Clara, please," he whispered, his voice cracking. "I have nothing. Beatrice won't even speak to me. I'm going to prison. If you just drop the civil suit, if you just tell the judge you forgive the trust transfer... they might give me probation."

I looked at him, feeling absolutely nothing. No anger, no love. Just the cold, sterile distance one feels when looking at a stranger.

"I'm not dropping anything, Julian," I said smoothly. "But I will make you an offer."

Evelyn slid a document across the table.

"Sign away your parental rights completely," I said. "You will legally have no claim to Leo, now or ever. You will sign over the remaining 10% equity you have in the startup to cover the legal fees you forced me to incur. Do this, and I will write a letter to the federal judge recommending a lighter sentence."

Julian stared at the paper. "You're taking my son?"

May you like

"You never had a son," I replied coldly. "You walked past his nursery to go to the beach. Sign it."

With shaking hands, defeated and broken, Julian signed his name.
