Chapter 10 - Sunrise

A year later, the estate was full of light.
The dark, heavy furniture Julian had insisted upon was gone. The house was bright, filled with toys, laughter, and the smell of fresh flowers. Leo was taking his first steps, a happy, thriving little boy who knew nothing of the storm he was born into.
Julian was serving four years in a minimum-security federal facility. Without my letter, it would have been ten. I didn't write it out of kindness; I wrote it because I wanted him to know that I held his fate in my hands, and I had chosen to let him live with his mediocrity.
Beatrice had been forced to sell her luxury condo to pay off IRS debts stemming from the undeclared "gifts" Julian had given her. She was currently renting a one-bedroom apartment in a less-than-desirable zip code, completely alienated from the high-society circles she used to terrorize.
I stood on the porch, holding Leo on my hip, watching the morning sun break over the horizon. I had survived the betrayal, protected my child, and reclaimed my life.
The old Clara would have stayed silent to keep the peace. The new Clara knew that sometimes, to find your peace, you have to burn the false kingdom to the ground.

"We're going to have a beautiful day, Leo," I whispered. And for the first time in a long time, I knew it was the absolute truth.
