Chapter 4 - The Long Flight Home

I was discharged from the hospital on day three, bringing little Leo home to a fortress. The house was spotless, quiet, and completely mine. The title of the estate, as Evelyn reminded me, was actually entirely in my name—a gift from my late father that Julian loved to pretend he paid for.
Julian and Beatrice’s journey back from Cabo was less luxurious. With their cards blocked, they had to rely on the emergency cash Julian kept in his money clip—barely enough to buy two last-minute, middle-seat economy tickets on a budget airline flying out of San Jose del Cabo.
They landed exhausted, sunburned, and furious.
They took a cheap taxi back to the estate, likely fuming and planning how they were going to punish me for the "bank error." Through the security cameras I had linked to my phone, I watched them march up the front steps. Julian confidently punched his code into the keypad.
Red light. Access Denied.
He tried again, punching the keys harder. Red light.
Beatrice shoved him aside. "You’re doing it wrong, Julian! Let me." She tried her code. Red light.
Julian began pounding his fist against the heavy oak door. "Clara! Open this door! I know you're in there!"

I sat in the nursery, rocking Leo in the glider, watching the monitor with a serene smile. I pressed the two-way intercom button.
"The locks have been changed, Julian," my voice echoed over the porch speaker. "And you are trespassing."
