While Marcus rotted in county jail awaiting trial, Jessica thought she had escaped unscathed. She had quickly pivoted, finding a new, older, wealthier man to date.
But Sarah wasn't finished.
Sarah filed a massive civil suit against Jessica Hayes for "Alienation of Affection" and "Unjust Enrichment," using the paper trail of the stolen 529 college funds.
Jessica was served the papers while at a luxury country club with her new boyfriend. The process server loudly announced the contents of the lawsuit in front of the entire dining room.

When the new boyfriend realized Jessica was being sued for stealing a dead child's college fund to buy a townhouse, he stood up, threw a hundred-dollar bill on the table for his drink, and walked out without a word.
The civil court froze the townhouse. Jessica was evicted within thirty days. She had no job, her reputation in the city was completely destroyed, and she was forced to move back into her mother's cramped basement with Chloe, drowning in legal debt she could never repay.
