Chapter 7 - The Arrest
The DA moved swiftly. The public outrage generated by the leaked story of a father leaving his son to die while saving his mistress’s child was too massive to ignore.
Marcus was arrested at his motel on a Tuesday morning. The local news crews were tipped off. They filmed him being marched out in handcuffs, his face hidden behind his jacket.
He was charged with Criminal Negligence Resulting in Death, Insurance Fraud, and Embezzlement.
The bail was set at $500,000. Marcus had zero assets left. He called his parents, begging them to put up their house for collateral.
His mother answered the phone.
"Mom, please," Marcus cried through the receiver in the holding cell. "They're going to put me in general population. I can't survive in here."
There was a long silence on the other end of the line.

"You stopped being my son the day you let my grandson die," his mother said quietly.
The line went dead. Marcus dropped the receiver, sliding down the concrete wall of the cell, realizing for the first time that he was entirely, utterly alone.
