Chapter 1 - The Weight of "Too Late"

Dr. Vance’s words hung in the sterile air of the hallway, heavier than a physical blow. You arrived too late.

Marcus froze, his hand hovering over the door handle of the Pediatric ICU. The panic that had been etched into his features morphed into a sickening realization. "What do you mean?" he choked out, his voice cracking. "I was just here. He just had a fever."

"He had a prolonged febrile seizure that deprived his brain of oxygen, Mr. Kensington," Dr. Vance said, her voice devoid of any bedside sympathy. She knew exactly what had happened at the triage desk. The entire ER staff knew. "Because his intake was delayed, the damage was catastrophic. He is currently on life support, but brain death protocols are being initiated."

Marcus’s knees actually buckled. He hit the linoleum floor, a guttural sob tearing from his throat.

Inside the glass-walled room, Sarah sat in a hard plastic chair, holding Leo's lifeless, tube-covered hand. She didn't look through the glass at her husband kneeling in the hallway. She didn't cry. The tears had evaporated, leaving behind a cold, absolute void.

The man sobbing outside wasn't her husband anymore. He was the man who had murdered her son.

"Sarah," Marcus pleaded through the crack in the door, trying to push past the doctor. "Sarah, please! Let me see him! It was a mistake! Chloe couldn't breathe!"

Sarah finally turned her head. Her eyes, bloodshot and hollow, locked onto his.

"If you cross that threshold, Marcus," Sarah whispered, her voice carrying a terrifying, icy calm, "I will kill you with my bare hands. Get out."

Dr. Vance signaled to the two hospital security guards waiting nearby. They grabbed Marcus by the arms and dragged the weeping man away from the ICU. Sarah turned back to her son, kissing his cooling forehead. She had lost her boy, but she was going to make sure Marcus lost his entire world.
