Chapter 7 - The Arrest

David fought back viciously, punching me hard in the ribs.

I gasped in pain, but I refused to let go of his collar.

My mother, finally snapping out of her delusion, grabbed a heavy glass ashtray.

She slammed it down onto the back of David's head with a sickening crack.

David went entirely limp, collapsing onto the expensive Persian rug.

We stood there panting, staring at his unconscious body.

"Call 911," I gasped to Elena.

Within minutes, the penthouse was swarming with armed SWAT officers.

They dragged David away on a stretcher, handcuffed to the rails.

An FBI agent approached us, taking the black ledger from my mother's shaking hands.

"This is the evidence we've been looking for," the agent confirmed.

"He won't be getting bail this time."

My mother held her hands out, expecting to be arrested.

The agent read her Miranda rights and placed her in handcuffs.

She looked at me with tears streaming down her face.

"I'm sorry, Rachel," she whispered.

I turned my back on her.

Some betrayals are simply too deep to forgive, even on Christmas.

I walked out of the apartment with Elena, ready to go back to our children.
