Chapter 5 - The Infiltration

Leaving the children safely with Sarah at the cabin, Elena and I drove back into the city.

It was a reckless plan, but waiting for the police to act was a luxury we didn't have.

David’s apartment was in a luxury high-rise with fingerprint security.

But Elena was still legally his wife, and her fingerprint was still registered in the system.

We slipped past the sleeping concierge and rode the elevator to the penthouse.

Elena’s hand shook as she pressed her thumb to the scanner.

The light flashed green, and the heavy door clicked open.

The apartment was dark and smelled heavily of expensive bourbon and stale smoke.

"His office is in the back," Elena whispered, leading the way.

We crept through the massive living room, using the flashlights on our phones.

Inside the office, the desk had been completely ransacked.

Drawers were pulled out, and papers were scattered everywhere.

"Someone beat us to it," I said, my heart sinking.

Suddenly, a cold voice echoed from the doorway.

"Looking for this?"

We spun around to see my mother standing there, holding the black leather ledger.

She looked entirely unhinged, her hair wild and her makeup smeared.

"Mom?" I breathed, terrified.

"David promised me Paris," she muttered, clutching the book.

"If I give this to the FBI, they'll put me in a cage."
