Chapter 2 - The Interrogation

The police station was freezing cold on Christmas Eve.
I sat in a sterile waiting room with a stale cup of coffee while my children slept on a vinyl bench.
Elena sat across from me, rocking her baby boy to sleep.
"I am so sorry I ruined your holiday," Elena whispered.
"You didn't ruin it," I replied softly.
"You saved my children from being kidnapped."
Elena explained that she had met David three years ago, right after our divorce.
He had swept her off her feet with expensive dinners and promises of a beautiful life.
But as soon as they were married, the financial abuse began.
"He drained my inheritance and put everything in shell companies," she explained.
"When I tried to leave, he threatened to take my son to South America."
A detective walked into the waiting room, holding a thick file.
"Your ex-husband is refusing to speak without a lawyer," the detective said.
"But your mother is singing like a canary."
I stood up, my heart pounding in my chest.
"What did my mother do?" I asked.
The detective sighed and rubbed his tired eyes.
"She wasn't just planning to run away with David for romance."
"She was acting as his primary money mule."
My jaw dropped as the detective explained the depths of her betrayal.
David had convinced my mother that my father was hiding millions in offshore accounts.

He promised her half of the money if she helped him launder his stolen funds through her personal bank accounts.
My mother had traded my children's safety for a promise of a luxurious retirement with my abusive ex-husband.
