Chapter 4 - The Hunted

I dropped the phone on the hotel bed as if it were on fire.

"He’s out," I gasped, looking at Sarah.

Sarah immediately sprang into action, calling the precinct.

"He posted a million-dollar cash bond through a third party," Sarah confirmed, her face pale.

"We need to move you and the kids right now."

We packed our few belongings and rushed down to the underground parking garage.

Every shadow felt like a threat, every echoing footstep sounded like David.

We drove to Sarah’s private cabin in the mountains, a place completely off the grid.

Elena and her baby followed us in a separate car, seeking the same protection.

That night, Elena and I sat by the fireplace, drinking tea and sharing our horror stories.

"He has passports from three different countries," Elena warned me.

"He has money hidden in places the FBI will never find."

"We have to find his ledger," I realized.

"When we were married, he kept a black leather notebook with all his account passwords."

Elena gasped.

"I saw that notebook last week in his briefcase!"

We knew what we had to do.

If we wanted to put David away forever, we had to find that ledger.

And the only place it could be was inside his heavily fortified downtown apartment.
