Chapter 6 - The Standoff

"Mom, you have to give me that book," I pleaded, holding out my hands.
"He used you, Helen," Elena added gently.
"He was never going to take you to Paris, he was using you as a decoy."
My mother shook her head frantically, backing toward the balcony doors.
"You're just jealous, Rachel!" she screamed.
"You always ruined everything for me!"
Before I could respond, the front door of the apartment slammed open.
Heavy footsteps echoed down the hallway.
David walked into the office, holding a silver handgun.
"Well, isn't this a lovely family reunion," he smirked.
He pointed the gun directly at my mother.
"Hand over the ledger, Helen, and I might let you live."
My mother froze, finally realizing the monster she had allied herself with.
"You said you loved me," she whimpered.
"I love money," David corrected her.
I looked around the room, desperate for a weapon.
There was a heavy bronze statue on the edge of the desk.
"Give it to him, Mom," I said loudly, trying to distract him.
As David turned his attention slightly toward me, I grabbed the statue and hurled it.
It struck David hard in the shoulder, causing him to drop the gun.

Elena lunged forward, kicking the weapon under the heavy oak desk.
I tackled David to the floor, fighting with the strength of a mother protecting her young.
