Chapter 6 - The Fake Heart Attack

When Chloe didn't come home from her shift, and Brenda received the call from the county jail, she panicked.
She realized she was cornered. So, she played the only card toxic people have left when they lose control: the victim card.
My phone rang at 9:00 PM. It was a nurse from St. Jude’s Hospital.
“Sarah Vance? Your mother, Brenda, has been admitted. She collapsed at home. She’s asking for you. She says she might not make it through the night.”
A year ago, I would have dropped everything. I would have run to her bedside, crying, begging for her approval and love.
But I looked at Leo, sleeping on Marcus’s chest on the couch. I thought about sitting in a freezing car with slashed battery cables, screaming in pain while my mother laughed.
“Is she actually having a heart attack?” I asked the nurse flatly.
There was a long pause on the other end of the line. “Well, her EKG is completely normal. Her blood work is fine. She’s claiming severe chest pain, so we are keeping her for observation, but medically speaking, there is no evidence of a cardiac event.”
“She's faking,” I said.
“We cannot officially say—”

“Tell Brenda,” I interrupted, my voice steady and cold, “that she can die mad. Do not call this number again.”
I hung up and blocked the hospital’s number. Marcus looked at me, a proud smile spreading across his face.
