Chapter 1 - The Hospital Standoff

The air in the hospital room went ice cold.
Brenda and Chloe stood in the doorway, their cheap grocery-store balloons bobbing in the sterile air. Brenda was wearing her signature practiced smile—the one she used for church ladies and bank tellers. Chloe looked bored, shifting her weight and chewing loudly on a piece of gum.
“Oh, my sweet girl,” Brenda cooed, stepping forward. “We were so worried! We came as soon as we heard—”
“Stop right there,” Marcus’s voice was a low, dangerous rumble. He didn't yell. He didn't have to. The pure authority in his tone stopped my mother dead in her tracks.
He stepped directly between my hospital bed and the door, his broad shoulders shielding me and our newborn son, Leo.
Brenda’s eyes darted to Marcus, feigning shock. “Marcus? What are you doing here? Sarah, honey, I thought you told him to stay away. After he abandoned you—”
“Drop the act, Brenda,” Marcus said, his jaw tight. “I know everything. I know about the blocked calls. I know about the intercepted emails. And I know you both watched Sarah go into labor and refused to help her.”
Chloe scoffed, crossing her arms. “Oh, please. She was being dramatic. And how were we supposed to know her junk car wouldn't start?”
“Because you cut the battery cables, Chloe,” I spoke up, my voice shaky but gaining strength. I clutched Leo tighter to my chest. “You didn't just ignore me. You sabotaged me.”
Brenda gasped, pressing a hand to her pearls. “Sarah! What a horrible accusation! Your hormones are just out of whack. Tell this man to leave so we can meet our grandson.”
“He is not your grandson,” I said, the realization settling into my bones like iron. “You don't get to abandon me in my darkest hour and show up for the photo op. Get out.”
When Brenda took another defiant step forward, Marcus hit the call button on the wall. Less than a minute later, two large security guards appeared.

“These women are trespassing and harassing a patient,” Marcus told them calmly.
The look of sheer, unadulterated humiliation on my mother’s face as security escorted them out of the maternity ward is something I will cherish for the rest of my life.
