Chapter 3 - The Stolen Future

We spent three days in the hospital. By the time I was discharged, Marcus had everything arranged.

We didn't go back to the toxic environment of my mother's house. Instead, the silver Audi pulled up to a stunning, modern four-bedroom home in a gated community. The nursery was already completely furnished, filled with everything I could ever need for Leo.

But as we settled in, the dark reality of what my family had done began to fully unravel.

We were sitting at the kitchen island when Marcus handed me a thick manila folder. “My lawyer pulled these yesterday. I wanted to wait until you were strong enough, but you need to see this.”

I opened the file to find bank statements. Not mine, but Brenda’s.

“When I thought you wanted nothing to do with me,” Marcus explained softly, “I still wanted to make sure you and the baby were taken care of. I sent a check for $5,000 every single month to the house, made out to you. I sent it certified mail.”

I stared at the highlighted lines on the bank records. Deposit: $5,000. Deposit: $5,000.

“She forged my signature,” I whispered, nausea rising in my throat. “She cashed them into her own account.”

“Forty-five thousand dollars total,” Marcus confirmed. “Sarah, that’s not just bad parenting. That is felony fraud and grand larceny.”

My whole life, Brenda had complained about money. She had charged me exorbitant rent to live in my childhood bedroom while I was pregnant, forcing me to work double shifts at the diner until my ankles swelled to the size of grapefruits. All the while, she was sitting on a small fortune meant for her unborn grandson.

“What do we do?” I asked, looking up at him.

Marcus’s eyes were cold as steel. “We press charges. We burn their house of cards to the ground.”
