Chapter 2 - The Digital Trail

The hospital room was finally quiet. Marcus sat on the edge of my bed, gently stroking Leo’s tiny head.

“I am so sorry I wasn't there for the pregnancy,” Marcus whispered, a tear slipping down his cheek. “I thought you hated me. I thought you wanted to raise him alone.”

“How did you find out the truth?” I asked, leaning into his touch.

Marcus pulled out his phone. “Your landlord, Mr. Henderson. He likes me. He always thought it was weird that I suddenly 'moved away.' Last night, he was sitting on his porch when he heard Chloe laughing loudly in the driveway.”

Marcus tapped the screen and played a video. It was from Mr. Henderson’s Ring camera, perfectly angled toward my driveway.

In crisp, night-vision black and white, there was my sister, popping the hood of my car. I could clearly hear my mother’s voice off-camera: “Make sure you cut them clean, Chloe. I’m not driving her to the hospital. Let her figure it out, she needs to learn a lesson.”

My stomach churned. It wasn't just indifference. It was premeditated malice.

“Henderson sent this to me on Facebook Messenger last night,” Marcus explained. “I was already driving back to town. I had a private investigator looking into your family for the last two weeks because things weren't adding up.”

“A private investigator?” I asked, stunned. “Marcus, how could you afford that?”

He offered a soft, apologetic smile. “Sarah, when I told you I worked in software, I didn't tell you I owned the company. I wanted you to love me for me, not for my bank account. When you got pregnant, I bought a house for us in the suburbs. I was going to surprise you with it the week your mother told me you’d had an abortion and moved out of state.”

I felt the breath leave my lungs. “She told you I terminated the pregnancy?”

“Yes,” Marcus said, his eyes darkening with anger. “But we’re going to make this right. Starting today, you are never going back to that house.”
