Chapter 5 - Handcuffs and Lattes

Chloe loved her job at the high-end cosmetics counter at the local mall. She loved the attention, the gossip, and most importantly, looking down on people she deemed "less than."

Marcus and I were sitting in the food court, drinking coffee, watching from a distance.

At 1:00 PM, right in the middle of the lunchtime rush, two uniformed police officers walked past the perfume displays and approached Chloe’s counter.

We couldn't hear what was being said, but Chloe’s face turned violently pale. She laughed nervously, waving her hands as if waving away a bad smell. The older officer shook his head, pulled out a pair of handcuffs, and spun her around.

“Chloe Carmichael, you are under arrest for destruction of private property and reckless endangerment,” the officer’s voice carried over the quiet hum of the mall.

Customers stopped and stared. Phones whipped out to record.

Chloe began to cry loudly, her perfect makeup running down her face. “No! It was a joke! It was just a joke! Mom told me to do it!”

They marched her right past the food court. She caught my eye as she walked by in handcuffs. I didn't smile. I didn't gloat. I just took a sip of my coffee and looked away, burying the sister I thought I knew forever.
