Chapter 4 - The House of Cards

Brandon made bail three days later. He walked out of the county jail expecting his sleek black Mercedes to be waiting. Instead, he found nothing.

His phone buzzed. It was his business partner at the investment firm.

“Brandon, don’t come to the office,” the voice on the other end said, frantic. “We’re being audited. Someone leaked a massive dossier to the SEC. They know about the offshore accounts. They know about the missing pension funds.”

“What? Who leaked it?” Brandon demanded, panic rising in his chest.

“Martin Sterling’s legal team,” his partner hissed. “Brandon, what did you do to that man’s family? You’ve ruined us all!” The line went dead.

Brandon stumbled backward, sitting on the concrete bench outside the police station. He was facing thirty years for aggravated assault and kidnapping. Now, he was facing federal wire fraud charges.

He needed a lawyer, but his bank accounts were locked. The empire he thought he had built was nothing but a house of cards, and Martin Sterling had just turned on the fan. Desperate, Brandon realized he couldn't win in a courtroom. He needed leverage. He needed to silence Emily before she could testify.
