Chapter 10 - Dawn of a New Life

Two years later.
The sun was shining brightly over a sprawling coastal property in Maine. The air smelled of salt and pine needles.
Martin stood on the wrap-around porch, wearing his comfortable old jeans and a faded flannel shirt. He held a mug of black coffee, watching the waves crash against the rocky shore.
The screen door squeaked open, and Emily stepped out. She was glowing. The bruises were gone, but more importantly, the invisible weight that had dragged her down was entirely lifted. She had finalized the divorce, taken back her maiden name, and opened a foundation dedicated to providing emergency housing and legal support for survivors of domestic violence.
She leaned against the wooden railing next to her father.
“It’s beautiful out here today,” she smiled, taking a deep breath of the ocean air.
“It is,” Martin agreed, wrapping a strong arm around her shoulders.
They didn't talk about Brandon. They didn't talk about the shed or the mud or the police sirens. That part of their lives was permanently closed, locked away in a federal cell where it belonged.
Emily looked up at her father, the man who had traded his boardroom for a maintenance truck just to be closer to her, the man who had burned down an empire to pull her out of the dark.
“Thank you, Dad,” she whispered softly.

Martin kissed the top of her head, looking out at the endless, open horizon.
“Always, Emily,” he replied. “Always.”
