Chapter 1 - The Iron Click of Justice

The heavy steel of the police handcuffs clicked shut with a sound that cut through the freezing rain.
Brandon fought against the grip of the two uniformed officers, his arrogant facade completely shattering. Mud stained his expensive trousers, and his slick hair was plastered to his forehead.
“You can’t do this!” Brandon shouted, struggling as Officer Miller shoved him toward the cruiser. “I know the mayor! I know the chief of police! This old man is trespassing!”
Martin didn't even look at him. He was kneeling in the dirt of the shed, cradling Emily’s head against his chest. His daughter was shivering violently, her pale floral dress torn and soaked in cold mud. The rope burns on her wrists were a bright, angry red.
Judith stood on the patio, her silk robe clinging to her thin frame, her face pale with disbelief. “Officers, please! This is a misunderstanding. This is our property—”
“Actually, Mrs. Vale,” Martin interrupted. His voice wasn’t a shout; it was a low, terrifying rumble that carried over the storm. He carefully handed Emily over to the arriving paramedics, standing up to his full height. He pulled a soaked leather wallet from his jacket and handed a laminated black card to the senior officer.
The officer shined his flashlight on it. His eyes widened.

“My name is Martin Sterling,” Martin said coldly. “CEO of Sterling Residential Holdings. I own this estate. I own the land it sits on. And as of midnight, the Vales are officially trespassing on my property. Arrest them both.”
Judith’s wine glass slipped from her fingers, shattering on the stone patio. Brandon stopped struggling, his mouth falling open in horror as the realization hit him. The "retired maintenance man" didn't just fix houses. He owned the city.
