Chapter 8 - The Aftermath

The police cruisers drove away, their sirens fading into the distance.
The courtyard remained incredibly still for a few moments.
Then, Dr. Thorne slowly walked up the steps of the stage.
He didn't look angry.
He looked deeply moved.
He stepped up to the podium, gently moving my USB drive to the side.
He leaned into the microphone.
"Ladies and gentlemen," he said softly.
"I believe we have had enough excitement for one afternoon."
"However, a commencement ceremony is meant to honor truth, integrity, and the pursuit of knowledge."
He turned to look at me.
"Sarah Sterling has just demonstrated more courage and integrity than most people manage in a lifetime."
The crowd erupted.
It wasn't a murmur this time.
It was a deafening roar of applause.
Students threw their green caps into the air.
Parents cheered and whistled.
The sheer volume of their support washed over me like a warm wave.
My hands finally started to shake.
Not from fear, but from the massive release of adrenaline.
Dr. Thorne placed a comforting hand on my shoulder.
"You're safe now, Sarah," he whispered away from the microphone.
"They can't hurt you anymore."
I looked down at the brick pavement where my father had slapped me.
My cheek still stung, but the pain felt distant.
Like an old memory fading away.
I had survived.
May you like
I had meticulously planned this day for four years, and it had worked perfectly.
I was finally free.
