Chapter 7 - The Arrest

Four uniformed police officers pushed their way through the parting crowd.
They were followed by two plainclothes detectives holding badges in the air.
"Arthur Sterling!" one of the detectives shouted over the chaos.
"Put your hands where I can see them!"
My father raised his trembling hands in the air.
"This is a misunderstanding!" he babbled frantically.
"My daughter is having a mental breakdown!"
"She hacked my computer and fabricated everything!"
The detective didn't even blink.
He pulled a pair of heavy steel handcuffs from his belt.
"Arthur Sterling, you are under arrest for suspicion of felony fraud, embezzlement, and identity theft."
"Turn around and place your hands behind your back."
Arthur hesitated.
One of the uniformed officers grabbed his arm and forcefully spun him around.
The sharp click of the handcuffs echoing over the quiet quad was incredibly satisfying.
"Julian Sterling, you're coming with us too," the second detective announced.
Julian burst into pathetic tears.
"I didn't do anything!" he sobbed loudly.
"My dad made me do it!"
"He set up the accounts!"
"I just signed the papers!"
He was already throwing our father under the bus to save himself.
It was exactly what a Sterling did best.
The police cuffed Julian and began marching them both toward the waiting cruisers.
My mother stood frozen, clutching her expensive pearl necklace.
An officer gently but firmly took her by the arm.
"Ma'am, we're going to need to bring you in for questioning regarding the stolen trust funds."

She let out a hollow wail as she was escorted away.
I watched them disappear into the backs of three separate police cars.
