Chapter 15 - The New Beginning

A year later, I found myself standing in the university courtyard once again.

The sun was shining warmly, just like it had on that fateful commencement day.

But this time, I wasn't wearing a green gown, and I wasn't carrying a USB drive of secrets.

I was carrying a stack of mid-term exams to grade for my students.

I walked past the exact spot on the brick pavement where my father had struck me.

I paused for a moment.

I didn't feel anger anymore.

I didn't feel humiliation.

I just felt a profound sense of peace.

I had faced the monster in the daylight, and the monster had burned.

My phone buzzed in my pocket.

It was a text from David Kensington, asking if I wanted to join his family for Thanksgiving dinner.

I smiled and quickly typed back a yes.

I had built a new family.

A family based on mutual respect, honesty, and genuine care.

I looked up at the blue sky, took a deep breath of the crisp autumn air, and continued walking toward the faculty building.

The shadows of my past were gone.

My future was entirely mine to write.
