Chapter 6 - The Sirens Song

For a long moment, the only sound was my father gasping for air on the ground.
Then, from the distance, a new sound cut through the quiet.
Sirens.
Faint at first, but rapidly growing louder.
"I didn't just email the federal authorities," I stated clearly.
"I also called the local police about twenty minutes before this ceremony started."
"I reported a massive financial crime, and I informed them that the primary suspect was a flight risk."
The wail of the sirens grew deafening as multiple police cruisers turned onto the campus avenue.
Red and blue lights flashed against the historic brick buildings of the university.
Arthur scrambled to his feet.
His perfectly pressed gray suit was now covered in dust and sweat.
"Julian, we have to go!" he screamed.
He grabbed his son's arm, trying to pull him toward the parking lot.
But the crowd of parents and students instinctively closed ranks.
They formed a solid wall of human bodies, blocking the exits.
Nobody was going to let them escape.
"Move!" Arthur roared, shoving a father in the front row.
The man didn't budge.
Instead, he shoved Arthur right back, knocking the CEO off balance.
"You're not going anywhere, you thief," the man growled.
Julian tried to run in the opposite direction, but two brawny football players in graduation gowns stepped in his way.
"Sit down, rich boy," one of them said, crossing his massive arms.

The panic in my family's eyes was the most beautiful thing I had ever seen.
I stood safely on the elevated stage, looking down at the empire I had just burned to ashes.
