Chapter 5 - The Mother's Greed

"You cried earlier about how much I hurt this family," I said softly.
"You put on a wonderful performance."
"But let's show everyone what you were actually crying about."
I brought up the final document.
It was a trust fund ledger.
"When my grandmother died, she left a substantial trust fund in my name."
"It was meant to pay for my college and my future."
"But my mother, Eleanor Sterling, forged my signature when I turned eighteen."
"She drained the entire account."
"She spent my future on designer clothes, country club memberships, and keeping up the illusion of wealth."
I displayed the bank statements side-by-side with her credit card bills.
The dates and amounts matched perfectly.
"While I was working the night shift at a diner, she was buying Birkin bags with my inheritance."
"Whenever I asked about the trust, she told me the market had crashed."
"She told me I was selfish for even asking about money."
Eleanor covered her face with both hands, sobbing loudly.
But this time, nobody rushed to comfort her.
The other wealthy parents looked at her with pure, unadulterated disgust.
In their world, stealing from your own child's trust was the ultimate sin.
"That USB drive contains gigabytes of undeniable proof," I told the crowd.
"And before I walked up to this stage, I programmed an email to send automatically."
"Right now, this exact file is sitting in the inbox of the FBI, the IRS, and the SEC."

He collapsed onto the brick pavement, grabbing his chest.
