Chapter 7 - The Trap is Set

I refused to let the hospital administrator or Julian’s vicious lawyers anywhere near my fragile, premature daughter.
I grabbed my cell phone from the bedside table and immediately called Marcus, my voice shaking with a mixture of exhaustion and fury.
Marcus arrived at the hospital within twenty minutes, flashing his legal credentials and physically blocking the doorway to my room.
He confronted Julian’s high-priced attorneys in the hallway, his voice booming with absolute, terrifying authority.
He demanded to see the judge’s order, pointing out a massive, fatal flaw in their aggressive legal maneuver.
The court order specifically mandated that the DNA test must be administered by a neutral, third-party federal official, not a private clinic selected by Eleanor.
Julian’s lawyers looked visibly panicked; Eleanor had clearly instructed them to use a specific, highly corrupt laboratory that she had already bribed.
Marcus smiled, a predatory, dangerous grin that sent a shiver down the spine of Julian’s lead counsel.
He announced that he had already contacted a federal judge, and a certified government medical examiner was currently en route to the hospital.
The test was going to be completely legitimate, and there was absolutely nothing Eleanor Kensington could do to manipulate the results.
Julian, who had been standing silently behind his lawyers, looked pale, confused, and incredibly exhausted.
He locked eyes with me through the small glass window of my hospital door, his expression unreadable but heavily burdened.
I turned my head away, refusing to offer him a single ounce of comfort or forgiveness for abandoning me in the snow.
The federal medical examiner arrived promptly, conducting the DNA swab on little Lily with gentle, professional care.
He sealed the sample in a highly secure, tamper-proof federal evidence bag right in front of everyone in the room.
Marcus warned Julian’s team that any attempt to interfere with the federal chain of custody would result in immediate, severe criminal charges.
Julian finally spoke, his voice cracking as he asked if Lily was healthy and safe in the intensive care unit.
I looked at the man I had once loved with all my heart, feeling nothing but profound, absolute pity for his weakness.
I told him that Lily was a fighter, which was something she certainly did not inherit from her cowardly father.
Julian flinched as if I had physically struck him across the face.
May you like
He turned and walked away down the sterile white hallway, his massive legal team trailing behind him like defeated shadows.
The trap had been flawlessly executed, and now we only had to wait for the undeniable truth to detonate.
