Chapter 1 - The Freezing Reality

The snow felt like thousands of tiny, icy blades slashing against my exposed skin as I stumbled blindly down the long, winding driveway of the Kensington estate.

My thin cardigan was soaked through within seconds, clinging to my freezing arms and offering absolutely no protection against the brutal, howling Boston winter.

I wrapped my arms tightly around my swollen belly, praying that my unborn daughter could not feel the sheer terror and cold radiating through my shaking body.

Every step I took was a battle against the deep snow drifts, but the image of Eleanor’s victorious, wicked smirk pushed me forward.

I reached into my pocket with numb fingers, feeling the thin, crumpled thirty dollars that constituted my entire net worth in that horrifying moment.

Julian had frozen my bank accounts before he even confronted me in the bedroom.

He had planned this execution perfectly, stripping me of my resources before dropping the guillotine on our marriage.

I pulled out my cell phone, my hands shaking so violently that I almost dropped the device into a snowbank.

The battery icon flashed a dangerous red warning, indicating I only had five percent of power left to save myself and my child.

I scrolled past Julian’s name, past the numbers of the high-society friends who would undoubtedly side with the Kensington family, and clicked on a familiar contact from my past.

Sarah was my oldest friend from nursing school, a woman who knew me long before I wore designer clothes and lived behind iron gates.

She answered on the second ring, her sleepy voice instantly turning into absolute panic when she heard the violent wind and my desperate, gasping sobs over the line.

I told her I was locked out, freezing, and that Julian had thrown me away over a lie.

Sarah did not ask for proof, nor did she hesitate or question my story for a single second.

She demanded my location and told me to keep walking toward the main road where she could safely pull her car over.

I forced my frozen legs to keep moving, my boots slipping on the black ice hidden beneath the fresh, powdery snow.

Headlights finally pierced through the blinding whiteout conditions, and Sarah’s beat-up sedan skidded to a halt on the shoulder of the road.

She threw open the passenger door, wrapping me in a thick, heated wool blanket before I even fully collapsed into the warm seat.

As the car heater blasted against my frozen skin, the physical pain of the cold began to fade, replaced by a deep, burning rage.

Eleanor Kensington thought she had buried me in the snow tonight.

She had absolutely no idea that she had just planted a seed of vengeance that would eventually grow to destroy her entire empire.
