Chapter 9 - The Arraignment Hearing

The atmosphere inside Courtroom 3B of the Federal District Court was electric with tension. Every bench in the gallery was packed with legal observers, military personnel showing support for Grandfather, and local citizens who had followed the shocking news reports. I sat in the front row directly behind the federal prosecutor, wearing my service dress uniform, my posture rigid and unwavering.

A side door opened, and federal marshals led Richard, Beatrice, and Julian into the courtroom. They were chained together at the ankles and wrists, wearing matching orange prison jumpsuits. The haughty, superior posture they had maintained for decades was completely gone; they kept their heads bowed, terrified of the public glare and the countless sketches being made by courtroom artists.

Federal District Judge Marcus Vance slammed his gavel down, bringing the room to instant silence. "We are here for the preliminary arraignment and bail determination in the matter of the United States versus Richard Sterling, Beatrice Sterling, and Julian Sterling."

The federal prosecutor, a sharp veteran attorney named Sarah Jenkins, stood up and addressed the bench. "Your Honor, the government has filed a thirty-two-count indictment against the defendants, including conspiracy to commit attempted murder, severe elder abuse, wire fraud, identity theft, and unlawful imprisonment. Given the severity of the crimes, their proven flight risk—as demonstrated by defendant Julian Sterling attempting to board a flight to South America with stolen gold—and the overwhelming forensic evidence, we request remand without bail."

The court-appointed defense attorney attempted to argue for house arrest and electronic monitoring, citing the defendants' lack of prior criminal records and ties to the community.

Judge Vance leaned over his elevated bench, staring down at my family with undisguised disgust. "I have reviewed the preliminary evidence, including the audio recordings and the medical reports on Mr. Arthur Sterling. The callousness displayed by the defendants shocks the conscience of this court. House arrest? You want me to send them back to the very estate where they kept an elderly veteran chained in a shed? Absolute denial of bail for all three defendants. Remanded to federal custody until trial."

As the gavel banged down, Beatrice let out a loud, wailing sob, collapsing against my father’s shoulder as the marshals dragged them back toward the holding cells. I watched them go without a single shred of remorse.
