Chapter 7 - Arthur Speaks From The Heart

By day three of the ordeal, Grandfather Arthur had been transferred from the intensive care unit to a private, high-security recovery suite at the military hospital. His fluids were balanced, his infections were responding aggressively to IV antibiotics, and the color had finally returned to his cheeks. When I walked into the room carrying a fresh change of civilian clothes for him, he was sitting up in bed, reading a digital tablet provided by the nursing staff.
He looked up and gave me a warm, genuine smile that made the heavy burden on my shoulders feel infinitely lighter. "Morgan. The doctors tell me I'm going to make a full recovery, minus a few pounds I couldn't afford to lose anyway."
"You are tough as nails, Grandpa," I said, pulling up a chair beside his bed and resting my hand on his arm. "The medical staff said your heart is stronger than men half your age. All that time in the infantry paid off."
Arthur’s smile faded slightly, replaced by a deep, sorrowful reflection as he looked out the window toward the city skyline. "I knew Richard was greedy. From the time he was a young man, he always looked for the easy shortcut, the quick payout. But I never imagined my own flesh and blood could look me in the eye while locking me in a freezing shed to starve."
"They were blinded by jealousy and greed," I said gently. "They couldn't stand the fact that you built your own wealth through honest work while they squandered every opportunity you gave them."
"They wanted the land, Morgan," Arthur whispered, turning his gaze back to me. "The two hundred acres surrounding Stonehaven. A commercial developer offered them twelve million dollars to bulldoze the old homestead and put up a luxury shopping complex. I told them over my dead body. So... they decided to arrange precisely that."

"The developers will be receiving a visit from my investigators today," I assured him, feeling a fresh wave of determination settle into my bones. "We are tracing every phone call, every email, and every preliminary contract. Anyone who conspired with them will face federal charges."
Arthur placed his weathered hand over mine and squeezed tightly. "I don't care about the money anymore, Morgan. I only care that you are home. You are the only real legacy I have left in this world."
