Chapter 5 - Breaking Richard Sterling

My father, Richard Sterling, had always fancied himself the brilliant patriarch of the family, a businessman who could negotiate his way out of any corner. When I entered his interrogation room, he was sitting with his posture erect, trying to project an air of calm authority despite the wrinkled prison scrubs he wore.
"Morgan," he said in a measured, condescending tone. "Let us look at this logically. Your grandfather is eighty-eight years old. He has dementia. He wandered out into that shed on his own yesterday afternoon and locked himself in by accident. You are blowing a simple domestic misunderstanding into a federal circus because of your childhood resentment toward us."
I sat down opposite him and opened a black protective case, pulling out a small, heavy silver electronic device. I set it on the table between us and pressed the play button.
A familiar voice crackled through the speaker—my father’s own voice, recorded three weeks ago from the motion-sensor security camera he had foolishly installed overlooking the backyard shed.
"If the old man doesn't sign the revised will by Friday, double the dose of the horse tranquilizer in his soup. I don't care if his kidneys fail. The coroner will just write it off as natural heart failure due to old age, and we get the seven million clear of probate."
Then came my mother’s voice on the recording: "Make sure Julian keeps the padlock oiled. We can't have the neighbors hearing him banging on the door again like last month."
I clicked the device off. The silence in the interrogation room was absolute. The color drained completely from my father’s face, leaving his skin the color of wet ash. His arrogant posture collapsed, his shoulders slumping as his breathing turned ragged and shallow.
"Where... how did you get that?" he whispered, his eyes fixed on the recorder in horror.

"You connected your backyard security cameras to your home Wi-Fi network," I replied, my voice dripping with professional contempt. "My cyber division hacked your cloud storage within three minutes of me stepping onto your driveway last night. We have over four hundred hours of high-definition video and audio documenting every single day of your abuse."
Richard buried his face in his trembling hands, finally realizing that no amount of smooth talking, legal loopholes, or family guilt would save him from the absolute ruin he had brought upon himself.
