Chapter 17 - Julian on the Witness Stand

The turning point of the trial arrived on the fourth day of testimony, when the prosecution called its star witness to the stand: Defendant Julian Sterling. A collective murmur rippled through the packed courtroom as my younger brother was led to the witness box by a federal marshal, wearing a dark suit provided by his attorney, his face pale and sweating profusely.
He raised his right hand and swore the oath to tell the truth, his voice trembling slightly as he sat down in the leather chair. Sarah Jenkins approached the witness stand holding a thick binder of financial records and encrypted chat logs.
"Mr. Sterling," Jenkins asked clearly. "Can you identify the two individuals sitting at the defense table?"
Julian swallowed hard, his eyes flickering toward our parents for a fraction of a second before darting away. "Yes. That is my father, Richard Sterling, and my mother, Beatrice Sterling."
"Mr. Sterling, were you aware that your grandfather, Arthur Sterling, was being confined inside a locked shed on the Stonehaven estate between the months of March and September of this year?"
"Yes," Julian answered, his voice barely above a whisper. "I was aware."
"Who ordered him to be placed in that shed, and who purchased the heavy-duty padlock used to seal the door?"
Julian took a deep, shuddering breath, gripping the edges of the witness stand until his knuckles turned white. "My father ordered it. He said Grandpa was becoming too stubborn about signing over the land rights to the commercial developers. My mother bought the padlock at a local hardware store, and she instructed me to keep the side gate locked so the landscapers wouldn't see the shed."
A collective gasp echoed through the courtroom gallery. Beatrice jumped to her feet, her face contorted with rage as she pointed at her own son.

"You liar!" she screamed across the room, completely losing her composure. "We did this for you, Julian! We did it so you would have your inheritance! You ungrateful little Judas!"
"Order in the court!" Judge Vance roared, banging his gavel down with explosive force as federal marshals rushed forward to force Beatrice back into her chair. "One more outburst from the defense table, and I will have the defendants gagged and bound for the remainder of this trial! Proceed with the witness, Ms. Jenkins!"
