Chapter 6 - The Foggy Escape

The next morning arrived with a heavy, oppressive fog that perfectly mirrored the terrifying anxiety constantly swirling inside my chest.

I cooked Liam his absolute favorite breakfast of scrambled eggs and black coffee, making sure my hands didn't shake while holding the plates.

He sat casually at the kitchen island, scrolling through his boring corporate emails on his tablet, completely oblivious to my silent preparations.

"I have a massive client presentation today, so I won't be home until after eight o'clock tonight," he announced incredibly casually.

It was the absolute greatest news I could have possibly heard, giving me a massive ten-hour window to flawlessly execute my escape.

"Good luck with the presentation, I know you will do amazing," I lied effortlessly, forcing a bright, entirely supportive smile onto my face.

He kissed my forehead before grabbing his expensive leather briefcase and confidently walking out the heavy front door.

I stood completely frozen in the kitchen, listening intently until the sound of his car engine completely faded away down the quiet street.

As soon as the house was entirely silent, I sprinted upstairs and frantically retrieved my hidden duffel bag from the dusty attic.

I changed into plain, incredibly dark clothing and put on a baseball cap to entirely hide my recognizable blonde hair from any neighborhood security cameras.

I deliberately left my diamond wedding ring sitting directly on top of the printed insurance papers I had pulled from his desk.

I wanted him to know exactly why I was leaving, and that his murderous, deeply greedy secret was completely exposed.

I grabbed my secret stash of cash and walked out the back door, leaving the beautiful, terrifying colonial house behind forever.

I didn't look back once as I disappeared into the thick morning fog, finally taking my very first breath of real freedom.
