Chapter 3 - The Secret Fund

I spent the next two weeks recovering quietly at home, playing the role of the docile, obedient wife to absolute perfection.

Liam aggressively monitored my every single move, checking my phone logs and completely controlling the household finances without exception.

He took my credit cards away, falsely claiming I needed to focus entirely on healing without the stress of managing our bills.

But he severely underestimated the resourcefulness of a woman who had finally accepted that her husband was a complete monster.

Every Tuesday, Liam stayed late at his downtown architectural firm for their mandatory weekly executive board meetings.

I used those precious two hours of absolute freedom to meticulously begin building my secret, desperate escape fund.

I started carefully pocketing small amounts of cash from the grocery allowance he left me on the kitchen counter each morning.

I hid the crumpled twenty-dollar bills inside a hollowed-out box of tampons buried deep under the master bathroom sink.

I also began secretly packing a lightweight duffel bag, tightly rolling up basic clothing and hiding it completely out of sight in the attic.

As a registered nurse, I knew exactly how to subtly gather basic first-aid supplies without arousing any suspicion from the local pharmacy.

I stole bandages, antiseptic wipes, and over-the-counter painkillers, stuffing them into the hidden bag alongside the stolen cash.

Every single hidden dollar and stolen bandage felt like a tiny, monumental victory against the terrifying prison I currently lived in.

I was no longer just passively surviving the daily abuse; I was actively plotting my ultimate, permanent disappearance from his terrible life.

The fear of getting caught was absolutely paralyzing, but the terrifying fear of staying with Liam was infinitely worse.
