Chapter 11 - The Defense Strikes Back

The immense peace I felt over Liam's highly publicized arrest was brutally shattered when Brenda called me exactly three weeks later.

"Liam’s wealthy family has hired the most ruthless, aggressive defense attorney in the entire state of Oregon," she informed me with a heavy sigh.

The lawyer was famous for entirely destroying the credibility of abuse victims on the stand, twisting their traumatic words into pathetic lies.

They had successfully managed to post his massive, multi-million dollar bail, entirely releasing him back into the public while he awaited his federal trial.

My heart hammered violently against my ribs as sheer, absolute panic entirely consumed the incredibly safe, quiet life I had built in Washington.

"He is wearing a highly restrictive ankle monitor and absolutely cannot leave the state, so you are perfectly safe here," Brenda quickly reassured me.

But knowing that the violent monster was sleeping in a comfortable bed instead of a cold prison cell absolutely made my stomach churn with disgust.

The defense attorney immediately launched a massive, highly aggressive media campaign, completely painting me as a highly unstable, deeply hysterical woman who framed her husband.

They falsely claimed I had secretly stolen the massive insurance documents to completely extort him, and that the physical abuse was entirely fabricated for sympathy.

My parents, who had completely fallen for his charming lies for years, refused to speak to me when I finally called them from the shelter.

"Liam has been absolutely wonderful to us, Emily, and we simply cannot believe you would completely ruin his life like this," my mother had said coldly.

It was incredibly painful to realize that his massive web of manipulation had completely poisoned my own family against me so thoroughly.

I was completely entirely on my own in this massive legal fight, but I absolutely refused to ever back down and let him win.

I spent my nights aggressively reviewing all the photographic evidence I had saved on my burner phone, entirely preparing myself for the ultimate courtroom battle.
