Chapter 9 - The Scales of Justice

Nine incredibly long, grueling months later, the high-profile trial of the decade finally reached its dramatic conclusion.
The downtown courthouse was completely surrounded by hundreds of reporters, all desperate to catch a glimpse of the billionaire and his resurrected wife.
Victoria Sterling and Marcus Thorne sat at the defense table, completely stripped of their wealth and their arrogant pride.
They both wore standard orange prison jumpsuits, their faces pale and drawn from months in a maximum-security holding facility.
Clara took the witness stand on the final day of the trial, looking completely radiant and incredibly strong in a sharp white suit.
She did not cry, and she did not tremble as she recounted the horrific details of her four years in captivity.
She looked directly into Victoria’s eyes as she described the dark, windowless rooms, the starvation, and the cruel psychological manipulation.
“She tried to completely erase my existence so she could steal my money and take my place,” Clara testified with a steady, powerful voice.
“But she completely failed, because she wildly underestimated my sheer will to survive and return to my husband.”
The jury was visibly moved, several members openly crying as they listened to the harrowing tale of survival.
When the prosecution finally rested their case, the verdict was delivered in less than two hours.
The judge looked down at the defendants with an expression of absolute, profound disgust.
“Victoria Sterling and Marcus Thorne, you have committed crimes of unparalleled cruelty and breathtaking greed,” the judge announced loudly.
“I hereby sentence you both to consecutive life sentences in a federal penitentiary, with absolutely no possibility of parole.”
Victoria let out a piercing, hysterical scream as the heavy wooden gavel slammed down with absolute finality.
She fought wildly against the bailiffs, completely losing her mind as they forcefully dragged her out of the courtroom in heavy chains.
Marcus simply slumped forward onto the wooden table, silently weeping as his entire existence officially came to a miserable end.
Julian sat in the front row of the gallery, completely still as he watched the absolute destruction of the people who had hurt his family.
He stood up, walking past the swarming reporters and the cheering crowds, entirely focused on only one person.
He met Clara at the heavy wooden doors of the courtroom, wrapping his strong arms securely around her.
“It is finally over,” Julian whispered, burying his face in the soft, fragrant curve of her neck.

“They will never, ever see the sun again, and they will never hurt anyone else for as long as they live.”
Clara closed her eyes, finally letting go of the heavy, dark breath she had been holding for four terrifying years.
