Chapter 1 - The Shattered Illusion

Julian did not strike Victoria Sterling.
He did something far more terrifying to a woman whose entire life was built on control.
He stepped directly into her personal space and snatched the crystal champagne flute right out of her trembling fingers.
With a slow, deliberate motion, he dropped the expensive glass onto the mahogany floor.
The crystal shattered into a thousand glittering pieces, mixing with the spilled tea and the ruined porcelain.
Victoria flinched violently, stepping back until her spine hit the carved wooden banister of the spiral staircase.
“You are going to tell me exactly how you managed this,” Julian said, his voice dropping to a lethal, quiet whisper.
“You are going to explain how you kept my wife in my own home while I was traveling the world looking for her.”
Victoria’s chest heaved as she tried to maintain her aristocratic composure.
“Julian, darling, you have to understand that she was entirely unstable,” she stammered, the lie tasting like ash in her mouth.
“I was simply protecting your reputation and your company from a woman who wanted to destroy you.”
Julian’s jaw clenched so hard his teeth ached.
He turned his back on her, refusing to give her another second of his attention, and dropped to his knees right in the center of the mess.
He ignored the sharp pieces of broken porcelain digging into the expensive fabric of his suit trousers.
He reached out slowly, his large hands trembling, and gently took Clara’s bruised, swollen hands in his own.
Clara flinched away at first, a purely instinctive reaction born from years of severe psychological torment.
The sight of her fear nearly broke Julian in half.
“Clara, it is me,” he whispered, tears finally spilling hot and fast down his cheeks.
“I am right here, and I swear on my life that no one is ever going to hurt you again.”
Clara slowly lifted her beautiful, haunted eyes to meet his.
She searched his face for any sign of the cruel monster Victoria had convinced her he had become.
Instead, she only saw the devastated, desperately loving husband she had lost four years ago.
A strangled sob tore through Clara’s throat, and she collapsed forward into his chest.
Julian wrapped his arms tightly around her fragile frame, burying his face in her hair as he held her against his racing heart.
The sound of approaching sirens began to wail in the distance, echoing off the iron gates of the massive estate.
Julian’s private security detail, having heard the commotion, flooded into the grand foyer with their weapons drawn.
“Arrest that woman,” Julian commanded, pointing a single, shaking finger at Victoria without letting go of his wife.
“And lock down every single exit in this house until the police arrive.”
May you like
Victoria screamed in protest as two massive security guards grabbed her arms and slammed her against the wall.
The nightmare was finally over, but the horrific reality of what Clara had endured was only just beginning to come to light.
