Chapter 4 - The Shadows Within

Julian returned to the estate feeling like he was carrying the weight of the entire world on his broad shoulders.
The revelation that Victoria had a secret accomplice working inside his own company was a dangerous, complicated variable.
He walked up the grand staircase and softly opened the door to the guest suite, expecting to find Clara still resting peacefully.
Instead, he found her standing by the massive window, staring out at the expansive green lawns of the estate.
She had showered and changed into a pair of soft silk pajamas, but she still looked incredibly fragile and thin.
“You shouldn't be out of bed yet, sweetheart,” Julian said softly, closing the heavy oak door behind him.
Clara turned around, and for the first time in four years, Julian saw a tiny spark of life returning to her beautiful eyes.
“I have spent four years trapped in a windowless room, Julian,” Clara replied, her voice steady and quiet.
“I don't want to lay in the dark ever again.”
Julian felt a massive lump form in his throat as he slowly walked across the room to stand beside her.
“I am going to sell this house,” Julian announced, the decision finally solidifying in his mind.
“We will move to the penthouse in the city, or buy a villa in Italy, or go anywhere in the world you want to go.”
Clara looked up at him, her expression surprisingly calm and deeply resolute.
“No,” she said firmly.
Julian blinked in surprise, completely taken aback by her sudden refusal.
“This is my home, Julian,” Clara continued, looking around the luxurious, sunlit room.
“She stole four years of my life, but I am absolutely refusing to let her steal my home too.”
“We are going to stay here, and we are going to tear out every single hidden hallway and secret door she built.”
Julian stared at his wife, completely overwhelmed by the immense strength hiding beneath her trauma.
He reached out and gently cupped her face, wiping away a single tear that had escaped down her cheek.
“I promise you, Clara, I will tear this place down to the foundation if that is what it takes to make you feel safe,” he swore.
Clara leaned into his warm touch, taking a deep, shaky breath.
“Victoria told me something while she was laughing at me in the dark,” Clara whispered, her eyes turning serious.
“She said that someone very close to you was helping her move the money, someone who sits in your boardroom every single day.”

Julian’s blood ran completely cold as Victoria’s earlier threat echoed ominously in his mind.
The enemy was not just locked in a police cell; the enemy was still sitting comfortably inside his own company.
