Chapter 7 - The Stolen Foundation

With the immediate legal threats handled, I returned my focus to my tech company.
But the private investigator, Vance, was not done digging into the Hayes family history.
He called me late Friday night and asked to meet at a secure location.
We met at a quiet, dimly lit diner on the outskirts of the city.
Vance slid a manila envelope across the sticky table.
He told me he had gone back twenty years into my parents' financial records.
I opened the envelope and found documents relating to my deceased grandfather.
My grandfather had left me a massive trust fund intended for my college and business ventures.
I had always been told that the market crashed and the trust was entirely wiped out.
That was why I had to take out massive student loans and work three jobs.
But the documents told a completely different story.
My parents had illegally drained my trust fund to the very last penny.
They had used my inheritance to buy their luxury cars and fund Leo's expensive private schools.
They had built their entire affluent facade on money that rightfully belonged to me.
I felt a sickening wave of betrayal wash over my entire body.
Every time they called me lucky, they knew they had stolen my actual head start.
They had watched me struggle and starve while they drank fine wine bought with my money.
I thanked Vance and paid him double his usual rate in cash.
I drove back to my penthouse in a state of icy, absolute rage.

The IRS audit was no longer enough punishment for what they had done.
I was going to dismantle their lives so thoroughly they would never recover.
