Chapter 16 - Building a True Legacy

The winter holidays rolled around, bringing the usual flurry of corporate parties.

In the past, holidays were a nightmare of family obligations and forced smiles.

I would always end up paying for the expensive dinners while enduring their snide remarks.

This year, I hosted a massive charity gala in the ballroom of a luxury hotel.

I donated millions to organizations that genuinely helped underprivileged youth.

I stood on the stage, wearing a stunning designer gown, and delivered a speech about resilience.

The crowd gave me a standing ovation that lasted for several minutes.

As I mingled with the guests, I spotted Uncle Robert near the back of the room.

I walked over and gave him a warm, genuine hug.

He told me he had received a postcard from Leo a few months prior.

Leo was working as a dish washer in a tiny diner somewhere in New Mexico.

He was terrified of being found and living in absolute, miserable poverty.

Uncle Robert asked if I ever thought about helping him out of his mess.

I looked Robert dead in the eye and gently shook my head.

"Leo has to learn how to survive on his own," I told him honestly.

"If I save him, I am just repeating my mother's terrible mistakes."

Robert nodded in agreement, understanding that my boundaries were made of solid steel.

We clinked our glasses together and drank to a much brighter future.

I was finally surrounded only by people who truly wanted the best for me.
