Chapter 9 - The Legal Collapse
Armed with Miller's confession and the financial paper trail, Assistant U.S. Attorney Chen filed an emergency motion to revoke all legal attorney-client privileges regarding Arthur’s financial transfers, citing the Crime-Fraud Exception. Arthur had used his legal defense accounts to fund a criminal enterprise aimed at witness tampering.
When the news hit Arthur’s primary defense attorney, Vance, the reaction was immediate. Vance was a man who loved money and reputation, but he loved his own law license and freedom much more.
On Friday afternoon, during a mandatory pretrial status conference, Vance stood up before Judge Harrison and did the one thing Arthur never expected: he filed a formal motion to withdraw as counsel.
"Your Honor," Vance said, avoiding Arthur’s furious glare. "Due to irreconcilable ethical conflicts and recent developments regarding the misuse of defense retainers, my firm can no longer effectively represent Mr. Sterling."
Arthur jumped to his feet, his orange prison jumpsuit rustling violently. "He works for me! I paid him half a million dollars! You can't abandon me!"

"Sit down, Mr. Sterling!" Judge Harrison thundered, gavel pounding. "Your counsel has the right to withdraw when a client utilizes legal channels to commit felonies. You will be assigned a public defender for your remaining hearings. And let the record show that any further attempts to contact witnesses or hire outside intimidation will result in solitary confinement."
Arthur sank back into his chair, looking around the courtroom at the cold, unimpressed faces of the federal prosecutors. His wealth was frozen, his lawyers had abandoned him, and his intimidation tactics had blown up in his face. He was entirely alone.
