Chapter 16 - The Sentencing
Two weeks later, we returned to Courtroom 4B for the final chapter of the legal battle: the sentencing hearing. Judge Harrison sat high on the bench, reviewing the pre-sentencing report prepared by federal probation officers. The guidelines recommended a heavy sentence, but the judge had sole discretion over whether the terms would be served concurrently or consecutively.
Before the sentence was pronounced, Clara was granted permission to deliver a victim impact statement. She walked to the podium at the center of the courtroom, standing tall and unsupported.
"Your Honor," Clara said, her voice clear and ringing with quiet strength. "For two years, the man sitting at that table tried to convince me that I was nothing. He tried to make me believe that fear was just a normal part of love, and that violence was simply the price I had to pay for a roof over my head. He was wrong."
She turned slightly, looking directly at Arthur, who couldn't even lift his head to meet her gaze.

"He thought he was powerful because he could hurt someone smaller than him," Clara continued. "But true power isn't about control or terror. It’s about truth, resilience, and standing up for yourself. Arthur Sterling didn't break me; he only revealed how strong I actually am. I am no longer his victim. I am a survivor, and today, I am leaving this courthouse completely free."
A quiet murmur of respect rippled through the gallery. Even the bailiffs looked at her with admiration.
