Chapter 11 - A Mother's Strength

That Sunday evening, I sat on the porch of the safe house with Clara. The sun was setting over the hills, painting the sky in deep shades of purple and gold. She was reading through the preliminary asset recovery reports the prosecutors had sent over. Because the federal government was seizing Arthur’s fraudulent assets, Clara was first in line for restitution. Every penny he had stolen from her father’s estate was going to be returned with interest.

"I used to think I was weak," Clara said quietly, closing the folder and looking out over the quiet landscape. "Every time he criticized my cooking, or hid my car keys, or told me I was losing my mind... I believed him. I thought I was lucky to have someone who tolerated me."

I reached over and took her hand. Her grip was firm now, no longer the trembling, fragile touch of the woman I had visited three months ago.

"Abusers rely on isolation, Mom," I said gently. "They convince you that the walls of the house are the edges of the universe. They make you think that nobody would believe you, that nobody would care, and that you can't survive without them. It’s an illusion. It’s a cheap magic trick performed by cowards."

Clara looked at me, her eyes shining with a fierce, quiet pride. "Well, the magician is out of tricks. When the trial starts next month, I want to be there every single day. I don't want to hide in a safe house anymore. I want Arthur to look across that courtroom and see that I’m not afraid of him."
