Chapter 4 - The Bail Hearing

Federal District Court was packed. Arthur’s high-priced defense attorney, a slick operator named Vance who specialized in defending white-collar criminals, paced confidently before the judge. Vance argued that Arthur was a respected pillar of the community, a businessman with no prior felony convictions, and that the incident on my porch was a simple family misunderstanding blown out of proportion by an overzealous ex-law enforcement stepdaughter.
"Your Honor," Vance smoothed his silk tie, "Mr. Sterling is not a flight risk, nor is he a danger to the community. We request release on his own recognizance or a standard cash bond."
The federal prosecutor, a sharp woman named Assistant U.S. Attorney Chen whom I had worked with on three organized crime task forces, stood up calmly. She didn't raise her voice. She simply pushed a USB drive into the courtroom monitor.
The audio recording played through the courtroom speakers. It was the call Arthur had made to my mother from the pharmacy. His voice was chillingly clear: "If you file those papers, Clara, I’ll bury you both in the woods where your cop daughter can't find you."

A collective gasp went through the gallery. Arthur stared at the defense table, his knuckles turning white.
Judge Harrison looked over his glasses, his expression like granite. "Mr. Vance, your client brought a loaded, unregistered handgun to the residence of a federal witness after making an explicit death threat. Bail is denied. The defendant is remanded to federal custody pending trial." The gavel struck like a gunshot.
