Chapter 1 - The Tactical Takedown

The arrogant smirk on Arthur’s face vanished the second the porch light caught the matte-black helmets and ballistic vests of six federal agents stepping out from the tree line. His eyes darted from me to the laser sights painting his chest in bright, steady crimson dots.
"Drop the weapon," Commander Marcus Reyes ordered, his voice echoing through the quiet suburban cul-de-sac with practiced, lethal authority. "U.S. Marshals! Drop it now!"
Arthur froze, his brain struggling to process how his narrative of intimidation had shattered in seconds. The stainless-steel revolver in his right hand suddenly looked heavy and useless. He opened his mouth to speak, perhaps to offer another charm-soaked lie or claim it was a misunderstanding, but the heavy metallic click of tactical rifles shifting onto target cut him off.
"Arthur," I said, stepping half a pace forward, my voice barely above a whisper but cutting through the humid night air. "You told my mother you'd put us both in the ground. You brought a firearm across county lines with intent to terrorize federal witnesses. You are done."

Slowly, his fingers opened. The revolver clattered onto the concrete porch.
Before the gun even settled, two agents moved with ruthless efficiency. They drove Arthur down onto the hood of his own luxury sedan, the impact ringing out like a bell. The sound of metal handcuffs ratcheting tightly around his wrists was the sweetest music I had heard in two years. As they pulled him back to his feet, his designer shirt wrinkled and his face flushed with rage, he glared at me with pure, venomous disbelief. He had hunted sheep, only to discover he had walked straight into a den of wolves.
