Chapter 7 - The Trap Closes

Beatrice Sterling stood in the doorway, holding a suppressed pistol. Behind her stood two heavily armed tactical officers.
"You really are predictable, Marcus," Beatrice smiled, her pastel cardigan swapped for a sleek black trench coat. "Did you really think I wouldn't anticipate you coming for the money?"
Marcus slowly raised his hands. "It's over, Beatrice. Even if you kill me, the drone footage is already on its way to the feds."
"A bluff," she scoffed. "If you had given it to the FBI, they would already be kicking my door down." She gestured to the officers. "Take the bag. And put a bullet in his kneecaps."
Before the officers could move, the glass wall of the office shattered inward. Huck had driven his pickup truck straight through the front doors of the community center, sending drywall and glass flying everywhere.
In the chaos, Marcus tackled the nearest officer, using the man’s own weapon to shoot the other. Beatrice shrieked, dropping her gun and scrambling into the hallway.
Marcus grabbed the duffel bag and jumped through the shattered window into the bed of Huck's truck. "Drive!" he yelled.
They tore out of the community center, sirens wailing in the distance. They had the evidence. But Marcus’s phone vibrated in his pocket. It was an unknown number.

He answered it. "Hello?"
"I have the boy, Marcus," Miller’s voice slithered through the speaker. "Huck's sister put up a good fight, but my guys are thorough. Bring the ledgers to the old warehouse in one hour, or Leo stops breathing."
