Chapter 2 - The Eye in the Sky

Marcus secured Leo in the locked cab of his police SUV with the AC blasting. "Where is it, Leo? Where did you put it?"
"In the storm drain," Leo coughed. "Under the grate by the cul-de-sac. The lady in the sweater... she saw me fly it over the old warehouse. I saw bad men, Dad. I saw a man in a police uniform hurt someone."
Marcus’s blood ran cold. The old warehouse on 5th Street. It was supposed to be an abandoned textile mill, but rumor had it the local cartel was using it as a distribution hub.
Marcus sprinted to the end of the street, ignoring Beatrice, who was now screaming into her cell phone on her porch. He pried the heavy iron grate off the storm drain and reached into the muck, his fingers brushing against the plastic rotors of Leo’s drone. He pulled it out, popping the micro-SD card from its slot and slipping it into his shoe just as two black, unmarked SUVs screeched into the neighborhood.
Deputy Chief Thomas Miller stepped out of the lead vehicle. He was a broad-shouldered man with cold, calculating eyes.
"Marcus," Miller called out, his hand resting casually on his duty belt. "Got a dispatch call about a disturbance. Beatrice is claiming you assaulted her."
"She tied my son to a gazebo, Tom," Marcus said, keeping his face entirely neutral.

"Kids will be kids," Miller smiled, but it didn't reach his eyes. "We need to take you in for a statement. Just protocol. Hand over your weapon, Marcus."
Marcus looked at the men flanking Miller. None of them were standard patrol officers. They were Miller’s specialized task force. The wolves. Marcus realized Leo hadn't just seen a corrupt cop. He had seen Miller.
