Chapter 5 - The Ambush

The swamp outside the trailer was usually filled with the sounds of cicadas and bullfrogs. But as the sun dipped below the horizon, the swamp went dead silent.

Huck cocked his shotgun. "Company."

Thermal imaging on Huck’s monitor showed four heat signatures moving through the cypress trees. Miller hadn't waited for Marcus to come to him; he had used the municipal dispatch grid to track the stolen Honda's toll-booth flashes.

"Get Leo into the floorboard bunker," Marcus ordered.

Huck scooped the sleeping boy up and lowered him into a hidden compartment beneath the floor rug. Just as the hatch closed, the front door of the trailer was blown off its hinges.

Gunfire erupted, shredding the aluminum walls. Marcus and Huck returned fire from behind the reinforced kitchen counter. The enclosed space smelled of cordite and shattered glass. Marcus took down the first two intruders with precise double-taps to the chest. They were cartel muscle, not cops.

Huck blasted a hole through the wall, taking out the third man. The fourth threw a flashbang.

BANG!

Blinding white light and a deafening ring paralyzed Marcus. When his vision cleared, the fourth man was standing over the floorboard hatch, aiming a rifle down at it. Marcus didn't hesitate. He lunged across the room, driving his combat knife through the man’s tactical vest.

They survived, but the safe house was compromised. And Miller knew they were alive.
