Chapter 4 - The Narrative

By the next morning, Marcus Vance was the most wanted man in the state.
Huck flipped on the old tube television in the corner. The local news was running a continuous loop. It wasn't the footage of Beatrice tying Leo up. It was the meticulously edited hidden camera footage of Marcus threatening a "defenseless woman," followed by his erratic escape across her lawn.
“Police Chief Marcus Vance is currently wanted for kidnapping, assault, and evading arrest,” the news anchor announced. “Internal Affairs, led by acting Chief Thomas Miller, urges the public to remain vigilant.”
"They're framing you to discredit anything you say," Huck said, tossing Marcus a cup of black coffee. "If you take this video to the FBI now, Miller's lawyers will claim you faked it to get back at the HOA."
Marcus looked over at Leo, who was finally sleeping peacefully on the worn sofa, his breathing even. "I don't just want to clear my name. I want to tear their entire operation down to the studs. Where do they keep the money, Huck?"

"If Beatrice is washing it through the HOA, the physical ledgers and the offshore routing numbers have to be in the community center’s reinforced safe," Huck replied. "But Miller will have a dozen armed men guarding that place right now."
Marcus loaded a fresh magazine into his Glock. "Then we're going to need more guns."
